If you are adopting your baby from another state, visiting relatives, or just taking a flight to someplace fun, you may be new enough as a parent not to know the best way to travel with your little bundle. There are many wonderful Sites on what to expect but I'd like to share what I know as the mother of 5 and grandmother of 4.
Where do I begin?
Opt for a backpack rather than a diaper bag and purse. You'll need the free arms! Assume this is the one going under your feet on the plane and pack your purse (or items from it) or wallet in that rather than carry a separate. Check into disposable pads also. You will need a clean surface to change the baby and that will not always be available.

How many diapers will I need to pack?
New babies usually have between 6-8 wet diapers in a 12 hour period though the way they make diapers now it can be less because they are so absorbent. On a long flight (8+ hours) if you pack 8-10 with you (and a package of baby wipes) then you should be ready even for those oops times. On a shorter flight 5-8 diapers is probably enough. Bring a couple of extra outfits also because those kids are sneaky and it sometimes leaks out the sides. Pack a large plastic zip-lock bag in case of accidents to avoid the smell.
Will my baby travel well?
Babies normally sleep a lot the first few weeks so your trip may be rather uneventful. Many parents don't know that when the pressure in the cabin changes the pressure is sometimes painful on baby ears...thus the inevitable "crying baby" on the plane. You can help if your baby starts to fuss by giving them a bottle or pacifier. The sucking motion actually helps pop the ear and relieves the pressure.
How do I manage feedings?
It is usually easier for you to carry a powdered version of the formula you need. It stores easily, doesn't go bad and can be the right temperature with water (and you can carry the formula can easily). I've found over the years carrying a thermos full of warm water works will. Then I can just pour it in when I need it. If you run out of water ask for a cup of cold and a cup of hot water and pour it into the thermos to keep.
How many bottles will I need?
You should only need two bottles with you...one is a backup. Fill both with powder formula and pack them in a diaper bag. When you pour water into the first, feed the baby and then finish, rinse it and fill it with powder again (when you have time - that's why you have a backup) so it's ready for the next feeding. This keeps you from having to do all of it WHILE the baby is crying.
What about the stroller and car seat?
The airlines don't normally make you put a baby in a car seat on the plane. They allow you to hold it on your lap so you will be able to hold, feed and care for it as you need to. Check with each airline however. The best car seat is the new kind that can be made into a stroller/carrier/car seat - MUCH more convenient. You can wheel the baby around in it in the airport and they will let you take it to the plane and store it under the plane as a carry-on - like when you have a bag that's too big. Then when you get off the plane it will be waiting there for you again.
Travelling with children is always tough, as I pointed out in my other article, Tips on Travelling with a Toddler. Of course, nowadays travelling is hard on everyone. The trick is to minimize what you have to carry and how to take care of necessities. Have a great trip!
